Billabong homestead lay calm and peaceful in the slanting rays of the sum that crept down the western sky. The red roofs were half hidden in the surrounding trees—pine and box and mighty blue gums towering above the tenderer green of the orchard, and the wide-flung tendrils of the Virginia creeper that was pushing slender fingers over the old walls. If you came nearer, you found how the garden rioted in colour under the touch of early summer, from the crimson rambler round the eastern bay window to the "Bonfire" salvia blazing in masses on the lawn; but from the paddocks all that could be seen was the mass of green, and the mellow red of the roof glimpsing through. Further back came a glance of rippled silver, where the breeze caught the surface of the lagoon—too lazy a breeze to do more than faintly stir the reed-fringed water.

Billabong, a vast property in rural Victoria, was home to Norah and her father as they worked the cattle and the few sheep they had. Norah’s brother Jim was in his final year of school in Melbourne and in the lead-up to Christmas, he would be home for good. She couldn’t wait to see him again. But before that could happen, a cousin, Cecil, arrived for a visit from Sydney. He hated the bush and everything it stood for – it made them wonder why he had come.
Jim and his mate Wally arrived by train in due course. The farm hands plus Mrs Brown (Brownie) and her girls in the house all prepared for Christmas. Norah, at fourteen was excited. But the most enjoyment she derived from her days was riding Bobs, her mare, and helping her father on Billabong. Life was good - nothing could possibly go wrong.
Mates at Billabong is the 2nd in the Billabong series by Aussie author Mary Grant Bruce, and was originally published in 1912. For a book which is 106 years old, it was a delight – totally enjoyable with quite a few laugh out loud moments – mainly because of the antics between Jim, Wally and Norah. But there were some sad moments as well, and I will admit to needing the tissues. Highly recommended.
My mum gave me this book when I was 9 years old, and I still cry every time I read this book. Mary Grant Bruce just has a knack of touching my emotions, and it's almost unbearable when Bobs dies. I can't wait till my children are old enough to read the Billabong books. They are full of fun, well written, with good wholesome values. Just a lovely read.
By being able to purchase "Mates of Billabong? I was able to complete the series of the "Billabong" books, particular favourites of mine since I was child. Now I can pass them on to my Grandchildren
I've always loved the Billabong books, and now I live in the same town as the author! Old fashioned (understandably) in some ways (some racial stereotyping -- the Aboriginal worker and Murty, the Irishman as well as the Indian hawker), but nothing remotely resembling white supremacy the message is that all characters are good and worthy of respect. I cried as a child when Norah's beloved pony was ridden to death, and I did again as an adult. Vivid writiing, very descriptive, and of an age of innocence long past, alas. Mary Grant Bruce rates as one of the very best writers for young people of her time, and I believe is still so today.
Once again, a good australian story to devour. I hope I can get more of Mary's writtings, and stories to read, have only found the two for now, but I will keep looking for her in the future.
A quaint way to escape to a time when people were decent towards each other. Where simple values were a code to live by. Also the complexities of human emotions, envy, rage, fear and anger all rolled into one book.
The insight into life on the land in the early 1900 in Australia was portrayed so beautifully by this author.
Can't wait to read more.
I am amazed how difficult it is to get hold of other books in this series.
It should be readily available to all children in Australia.
Mates at Billabong is a lovely story for any age reader. You can see the descriptions and get to know the characters. There is drama and angst and family values. Loved reading it!
